Questionnaire for Audience Feedback

During today's lesson my group and I created a questionnaire to be completed after a number of people have viewed our documentary and ancillary texts (results covered in question 3 of my evaluation):

Newspaper Advert Production: Screenshots

Whilst creating our print advert on Photoshop we took screenshots to show the production:

We firstly edited the image to make the eyes appear slightly redder and hence more sleepy looking.

We then added emphasis to the bags under the eyes to ensure the image conveyed tiredness, highlighting our topic of sleep.

We additionally made use of the lassoo tool to cut out the channel 4 logo before adding it to our print advert.

Then we began to add the text to the advert, beginning with the title and then adding our slogan and scheduling.

Lastly we placed black boxes behind the text, as this is one of the conventions of existing media products.

Drafting Newspaper Advert

My group today roughly planned out our print advert, ensuring that we follow the codes and conventions. We will be using an image of tired looking eyes (red in colour with large bags under the eyes), and will place the title and scheduling in a box in the lower left corner with the channel 4 ident on the right:

Codes and Conventions of Newspaper Adverts

After looking at a number of existing newspaper adverts we came up with the codes and conventions that we will have to follow when producing our own print advert:

Radio Trailer Production: Screenshots

Whilst creating our radio trailer on Adobe Premier Pro we took screenshots to show the production:

We began with a short clip from one of our vox pops featured in the documentary and then added the sound bed (lullaby) in the background.

We then edited our voiceover into smaller sections and placed them in the correct place, inbetween clips from our documentary.

Voiceover Script for Radio Trailer

Before producing our radio trailer we came up with the voiceover script, ensuring that we follow the codes and conventions by using clips from the documentary, and ensuring it is around 30-40 seconds:

Voxpop: “I need my sleep...I need a good 8-10 hours sleep”
Sound bed: Night-time lullaby playing
Voiceover:  How many hours sleep do you need to feel refreshed and back on track? For some going to sleep is a natural occurrence, but for others they wish it was that easy.
Voxpop: “My kids keep me awake at night”, “A bad snorer”, “If I’ve got stuff on my mind”
Voiceover: So how important is sleep?
Clip from interview: “We seem to manage quite well without sleep, that’s the major paradox”
Voiceover: And how do we tend to feel when we haven’t had enough sleep?
Voxpop: “Quite moody” “Lousy” “Grumpy”
Voiceover: How much of an impact can a sleeping disorder have on your lifestyle?
Join us as we delve into the other side of sleep...
Voxpop: “I fell asleep on top of a bloody cliff in Wales”
40 Winks, Wednesday, 8.30pm, Channel 4. Had a good night’s sleep?

Codes and Conventions of Radio Trailers

Today my group and I came up with a list of codes and conventions of radio trailers after listening to various examples of existing radio trailers:
  • Background music (sound bed)- relevant to topic
  • Use of accents and languages
  • Scheduling at the end of the advert (voiceover)- time, day, channel
  • Clips from documentary may be used
  • Sound effects
  • Clear and well spoken voiceover
  • Informal language
  • Target audience addressed
  • Voiceover asks questions- involves listeners
  • Voiceover can be intercut throughout
  • Around 30-40 seconds
  • May use a slogan

Documentary Production: Screenshots

Whilst editing our documentary together on Adobe Premier Pro we took screenshots of our production:

The software we used for editing allowed us to edit the sound (both music and the voiceover) in order for it to be the correct length for that section of the documentary.

We also added graphics at the start of each interview to display the interviewees name.

Adobe Premier Pro allowed us to adjust the speed of video clips in order to slow them down or speed them up.

In addition to using graphics for interviewees names, we added our title '40 Winks' to the very end of the title sequence.

Voiceover Script for Documentary

As a group we planned out the voiceover script for the different topics covered in the first five minutes of our documentary:

Introduction
Sleep has always been a major part of people’s lives and we all have our own needs for having a good night’s sleep; whether it’s the comfort of being in our own bed, the feel of our favourite cushion or just the company of our old time, one eyed, tatted ted.

Yawning
The most plausible explanation for the cause of yawning is that oxygen levels in our lungs are low; however, it is widely assumed that yawning is contagious or it occurs because we bored or tired due to lack of sleep, but there is no hard evidence to support this. So what is it that keeps us awake at night?

Sleeping hours
Teenagers need as much sleep as small children, normally around 10 hours, while those over the age of 65 need the least of all, only around six hours. Some studies suggest women need up to an hour's extra sleep a night compared to men, but for the average adult aged 25-55, eight hours is considered optimal.

Distractions at night
Many things can keep us awake or distracted at night, resulting in a lack of sleep and leaving us feeling overtired and deflated. These distractions may be things such as sleepwalking, bad dreams or even the snoring of others around us.

Shift workers/ remedies
Retailers such as Lush and Holland and Barrett specialise in selling over the counter remedies and aromatherapy products, specially formulated to help people manage their time around sleep. Such remedies are often used my working mums at the end of a hard day, people who have difficulty sleeping or whose sleeping patterns are disrupted by work.

Edit Decision List

Once all of our filming had been finished and logged we produced an edit decision list to outline the order our footage would appear in our documentary and what type of edit we would use:

Logging

Throughout the duration of our documentary filming we continued to upload the footage to Adobe Premier Pro and logged each section of filming using the logging sheet shown below:

Planning

Before beginning the production of our documentary my group and I planned out our title sequence, the framing for all six of our interviews and the questions to ask each interviewee:

Running Order

During today's lesson my group created our running order for a whole half an hour long documentary, however we will only be producing the first five minutes:

Documentary: 40 winks
Channel: Channel 4
Scheduling: Wednesday,8.30pm
Duration: 27 minutes (including advert breaks)
